Scaredy Cat for the Halloweensie Contest

TA-DA! Here is my entry for Susanna Leonard Hill‘s annual Halloweensie contest!

I’m a sleek black cat.

Herman loves me. He pets me, soft.

Good kitty.

There’s the jack-o-lantern, eyes shining bright and happy!

This is my favorite time of year.

The days are shorter. Night falls sooner.

The jack-o-lanterns give the first lights of the winter to come.

Whoo! Whoo!

Don’t worry. It’s just the neighborhood owl.

He still lives in the oak tree. But he’s too old to be spooky.

Hissssss! Did that crow cackle at me?

THUMP THUMP! What was that?

I jump onto Herman’s bed and curl into his neck.

Mom opens the door.

“Halloween cookies!”

Thanks for reading, everyone!

  1. This is lovely! Such fun sound words, and what a clever idea, writing from the cat’s perspective. Great job!

  2. Susanna’s contests are always so much fun…entering them…but also reading all the other entries. Great job, Beverly…I love that the black cat needs reassurance that she is safe.:) Great twist!

  3. Delightful, Beverly! I love that it’s from the cat’s POV, and I never thought of jack-o-lanterns being the first lights of winter, which made me think of Christmas lights to come – so evocative! I love the sound effects too! Great job! Thanks for joining in the Halloweensie fun and sharing your sweet scaredy kitty with us! 🙂

  4. Beverly, this is a cozy little story. It made me feel like snuggling with my kitty. :0)

  5. Really cute story! “He’s too old to be spooky.” That gave me a laugh!

  6. I loved your story!

But my heart skipped a beat when I spotted that studious capybara at the top of your page. I must follow your blog now, for your are pro rodent (aka “prodent”). And good for you.

    • Thanks, but it’s my son who is prodent… I’ll share your new word with him! On the way to school this morning we had a sad conversation about how humans built their cities on top of the rats and the rats had no choice but to go into the sewers… what was I supposed to say? You can check out my capybara friend at His name is Caplin!

      • Oh, I know all about Caplin. He’s a celebrity!

I used to have two pet rats. Good pets, but very sneaky. They always seemed to be looking to a way to outsmart me. And, on a few too many occasions, they did.

  7. Jumping into the middle of a bed to snuggle up is so comforting. Lovely read.

  8. Stacy Couch

You have such lovely imagery here, Beverly! And love the cat’s POV–it gives him and the other animals tons of character.

  9. Joanna

Love the choice of first person POV.

  10. Scaredy cat is the perfect title! I have some not-so-brave kitties myself…good thing I don’t depend on them for protection 🙂

  11. Halloween cookies! Yum!

  12. Just the right touch of spooky and comfort!

  13. Awwwww, it’s okay, kitty!!!! I liked the way he could explain away some of his fears, but for others he had to seek comfort. Isn’t that the way with all of us? Kids could really relate to this story.

  14. Stacy S. Jensen

Cookies are alway a great diversion!

  15. I love how this is both cozy and spooky! Great job!

  16. Nice to hear Herman has a neighborhood owl too!

  17. Great story..poor cat 🙂

  18. Great use of sounds! My son loves books like this. Well done!

  19. Great story– I really felt I was right there! Can I have a cookie now?

  20. Carrie Finison

Love the cat POV, and the Halloween cookies. I can just smell them…

  21. What a cute way to write a story, through the cat’s eyes. I would not have thought of it. Nice to meet you, too. 🙂

  22. Laura Shovan

I love the idea of an owl who’s too old to be spooky. Remember the cranky old owl in Beatrix Potter’s Squirrel Nutkin stories?

  23. This story made me want to be a cat! Herman is so kind I’m sure he would share his cookies.

  24. Now, cookies from Mom should dispel any fear! ;-}
